As we all wait for winter to finally be over (about 2 1/12 months too late), I played a round with some TBO’ers and there were still some questions as to how this new scoring system works. Figured I’d go through an example….

Let’s take this weeks upcoming match between Team 10 vs Team 11 – Devin vs. T-Bird, Dean Mott vs Jon, Joey vs Dan Mahar. Each Matchup has a total of 7 points up for grabs, so POINTS WILL BE AT A PREMIUM! My guess is the winning team has a point total of 71.

HDCP now has no factor on the match other than to calculate your Quota. Here’s a quick look at how its calculated.

  • Devin’s HDCP is a 3. The Quota formula takes the HDCP and doubles it (6). Then, that amount is subtracted from 34 (34-6=28). That end result (28) us then cut in half to give you your Quota (14).
  • T-Bird is a 6 HDCP. Double HDCP gives you 12. 34-12=22. 22 cut in half is a Quota of 11.
  • Dean Mott’s Quota is 10, Jon’s Quota is 10.
  • Joey’s Quota is 9, Dan’s Quota is 8.

With the Quota’s set, its time to look at how scoring actually happens. Remember, it doesn’t matter that you shot a 41 over the nine holes. You only score points based on how you perform on an individual hole. As you go through your round, you score points towards your quota. At the end of the round, you compare your quota vs your point total.

  • Eagle – 8 pts
  • Birdie – 4 pts
  • Par – 2 pts
  • Bogey – 1 pt
  • Double Bogey or higher – 0 pts

Let’s assume all six players go out and shoot their rounds with the below results

  1. Devin – 1 birdies, 4 pars, 2 bogeys – 14 pts
  2. T-Bird – 1 birdie, 3 pars, 2 bogeys – 12 pts
  3. Dean Mott – 4 pars, 3 bogeys – 11 pts
  4. Jon – 3 pars, 5 bogeys – 11 pts
  5. Joey – 2 pars, 4 bogeys – 8 pts
  6. Dan – 1 pars, 2 bogeys – 4 pts

Here’s where the Quota Calculations come in:

  1. Devin: 14 pts scored – 14 pt Quota = 0
  2. T-Bird: 12 pts scored – 11 pt Quota = +1
  3. Dean Mott: 11 pts scored – 10 pt Quota = +1
  4. Jon: 11 pts scored – 10 pt Quota = +1
  5. Joey: 8 pts scored – 9 pt Quota = -1
  6. Dan: 4 pts scored – 8 pt Quota = -4

To win the match, you compare how you did vs your quota and your opponent’s performance vs their quota

  • Match 1 – T-Bird vs Devin: Devin scored more points, but it equaled his quota. T-Bird out shot his Quota by one point (+1). Therefore, T-Bird wins the match and two points in the standings for his team
  • Match 2 – Dean Mott vs Jon: Both Dean and Jon out shot their Quota by +1 pt. Therefore, the match is a tie and both players are awarded one point for their team in the standings
  • Match 3 – Joey vs Dan: Joey and Dan both scored under their Quota. However, Joey was closer to his Quota, therefore he wins the match

So, across the three matches there is a total of 6 points up for grabs. Team 11 has scored 3 pts to Team 10’s 3 pts. But, there is also a final point up for grabs. This final point is a team point. What it does is accumulate the teams performance vs. Quota to see which team performed best.

  • Team 10:  0 (Devin) + 1 (Dean Mott) – 1 (Joey) = 0
  • Team 11: +1 (T-Bird) + 1 (Jon) – 4 (Dan) = -2

Therefore, the final team point is award to Team 10. Team 10 scores a total of 4 pts for the week (2 for Joey win, 1 for Dean Mott tie, 1 for Team Point) to Team 11’s total of 3 pts (2 for T-Bird win, 1 for Jon tie).

Clear as mud yet? Just read it again if you got lost….took me a few passes at it when I was modifying the scoring spreadsheet.
