Quota Questions…

So the IT Nerd got a few questions about how the off season rule changes impact Quotas. The bulleted points is just some quick items about Quota. Further below that is a detailed explanation…for those who care.

  • Your Quota will only move after you have played 4 rounds. If you have played Weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4, your Quota will move starting in Week 5. If you have missed a week, your handicap will move starting in Week 6.
  • There is no limitations on how much your quota can fluctuate on a week-to-week basis. The old rules stipulated that your Quota could only move a maximum of one per week. That’s been removed this year. Do not be surprised if your opponents or your Quota fluctuates more than one point week over week.
  • Once you hit the ‘4 rounds played’ mark, your Quota will only be calculated based on your last 4 rounds played. So “tanking” early in the season does you zero good. If you decide to tank Week 2, then that “tanked” round won’t even count after Week 6 (assuming you’ve played Week 2, 3, 4, 5). So, to jump ahead, your Quota in Week 12 is based off your performance in Week 11, 10, 9 and 8 (assuming you’ve played them).

Here’s a more detailed explanation of how Quota is calulated under this years rules

  1. If the player has not played 4 rounds yet, their Quota will be set to whatever they finished the previous year at.
  2. If the player has played 4 or more rounds, you take their raw average over the last 4 rounds. For arguements sake, let’s say those last 4 rounds were a 40, 43, 44 and a 46. That leaves the player with an average of 43.25 (173/4 = 43.25).
  3. Next step is to determine the player’s handicap. This is exactly like the old system. Player Avergae (43.25) – Par (36) = 7.25. We take that difference from par and multiply it by 80%. So, 80% of 7.25 is 5.8. Since our league rounds down, 5.8 is rounded down to 5. Therefore, the players handicap is 5.
  4. Once we have the handicap, we turn that into our Quota system. The handicap is first doubled to make it a handicap for 18, resulting in a 18 hole handicap of 10.
  5. The next step is to determine what the 18 hole Quota is. You’ll commonly hear the IT Nerd refer to a “starting point” when calculating Quota. This is just a solid number we picked. In our league, we use 34. We take our starting point (34) and subtract the 18 hole handicap (10) to get to an 18 hole Quota (34 – 10 = 24).
  6. The final step is to just take the 18 hole Quota (24) and turn it into a 9 hole Quota by dividing by 2. That gives this player a 9 hole Quota of 12.
