Week 17 Results, Week 18 Schedule

This is it, boys and girls…end of the line, time to separate the men from the boys, the champions from the LOSERS.

Let’s take a nice quick look at the standings and understand what needs to happen to make a difference.

So there are only three teams with a realistic chance. The team in fourth can only play spoiler for the team in third.

In theory, we could have a three-way tie for first place, but that would mean that the stars would need to align. For that to happen, the following needs to happen:

  • The team in 3rd (Donahue/Marty/Cregger) needs to take all 7 points
  • The team in 2nd (TJ/Mooney/Tom) needs to win 6-1

That would put the leaders, 2nd and 3rd place all tied at 75 points. But, the score of 6-1 is a tough one to get. That is the only scenario that puts the third place team into contention.

The likely scenario is that the 1st and 2nd place team are the ones with a chance at victory. The second place team needs to either get a 6-1 or 7-0 victory. 6-1 is a playoff, 7-0 is a title for them.

Week 15 Preview

With the standings page updated, things are starting to take shape with the race for the 2020 TBO crown. Before going into the matchups, let’s take a quick look at the standings and see which teams have a realistic chance at the title heading into Week 15.

The reality is with 4 weeks left to play, certain teams just can’t make up the distance and are dead in the water. As the IT Nerd sees it, there’s only 5 teams that have a realistic shot. That list could quickly get trimmed to 4 if the team of Connor/Mott/Zaleski doesn’t get high points this week.

Week 15
Craig Hawkinson12VS13Pat Donahue
Matt Lochner11VS9Marty Donegan
Joe Donegan6VS8Pat Cregg
TJ Donegan12VS15Devin Carrigan
John Mooney11VS11Dan Mahar
Tom Donegan8VS7Bill Kirkby
Connor Brown16VS13Dick Donegan
Sean Mott11VS10Mike Burns
Bob Zaleski8VS11Mike Shanahan

Hawk/Lochner/Joe vs. Donahue/Marty/Cregger – On the back, I like Donahue giving one, Joey getting two and Marty to continue his decline vs. Lochner. 5-2 to Hawk/Lochner/Joe

TJ/Mooney/Tom vs. Devin/Dan/Kirkby – 3 pts on the back is a tough number, so I like TJ, Dan Mahar in a even match vs. Mooney and Tom Donegan only giving one to Bill Kirkby. 5-2 to TJ/Mooney/Tom

Connor/Mott/Zaleski vs. Dickie/Burns/Shanahan – 16 pts is a tough mountain to get to, nevermind giving 3 pts to Dickie. I like Dickie to win there. I also like Mott in his near even match vs. Burns and Zaleski to take down Shanahan. 4-3 to Connor/Mott/Zaleski

We’re back up!! Week 14 updates, Week 15 schedule

After a brief time down, the website is back up! Ready for the technical explanation? If not, skip to the regular updates.

At first, BlueHost (server company) thought the site was down due a change in security settings. Somehow, the security changed from a US-based server to a cloud-based server. What that did was that whenever you would go to the website, it would try to call all the website information from one place (cloud-server) but there was no website files there. They were still on the other server (US-server). On Monday of last week, they re-directed the security setting to point back to the correct server (US-server). They told me it would be 24-48 hours to fix.

By Wednesday, it was clear the fix hadn’t worked. The first person I spoke to was unable to find the issues and escalated the question to the higher level. The escalated help desk informed me that the challenge was not security, but in fact a PHP code issue. PHP forms the backbone of the site, which is based on WordPress. With the code broken, the site wasn’t loading. Rather than dig into the code and find out what the answer is, I asked if we could just restore a previous version of the site. That was done on Saturday and we were back in business!

A stats update on a classic: All-Time Head to Head records

There was some clammer around the league about updating a stat I once ran which had all time head to head records. With the position night upcoming and the smack talk at an all time high between the top two teams, the IT Nerd found some time to hide away in his nerd hole and refresh the stats. I only included wins/losses/ties.

Here’s how to read the chart:

  • Find your name in the left hand column
  • Go across the sheet to right to see your record against that person listed in the column header/top row
  • The record listed is in W-L-T format. For example, Craig Hawkinson has 2 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie against Connor Brown

Some interesting finds that made me double check the numbers a few times, but turns out they were right. A few examples of some DOMINATION that is going over the years:

  1. This has to be the #1 example of domination: Tom Donegan has an unblemished record against Bob Moran at 8 wins, no losses, no ties (8-0-0). That’s quite a feat
  2. Tony Massa has done some regular stomping on a few people: a 9-1-1 record against Bob “Yeah Baby!” Zaleski, 7-0-0 against Jim “Mongoose” Morgan and an 8-2-2 record against Dan Mahar.
  3. The IT Nerd himself rents space in a few people’s heads as well: a 6-0-0 record against Connor Brown and a 7-0-0 record against Matt Lochner. I enjoy the space you boys rent to me upstairs!!

Looking ahead to the Week 12 matchup at the top of TBO: Donahue/Marty/Cregger vs. Hawk/Lochner/Joe…

Pat Donahue vs. Craig Hawkinson: A pretty even match historically (7-6-0 in favor of Hawkinson) and an even match with both players at 13. Donahue started off the year on fire, but has cooled as of late. Hawk has been a player on the rise with his scores dropping on the back 9. IT Nerd Prediction: Hawk +2, Donahue +1 (Hawk win)

Martin P Donegan vs. Matthew C Lochner: Marty has the slight edge historically (5-3-1 vs. Lochner) and both players have done well on the back. Marty’s improbable win against Mooney last week with a Birdie on #18 to pull off the comeback isn’t likely to happen this time. IT Nerd Prediction: Lochner (+1), Marty (even)

Joseph Donegan vs. Patrick Cregg: An absolute clash of TBO heavyweights (literally). This is the stuff of legend that medievil bards sang to maidens about, people walked two miles in a blizzard up-hill both ways to watch. Another historically even matchup at 6-5-0 with the edge to Joe. Despite the fact that Joe has recorded a 10 on #18 in his last two attempts and is likely to record a third straight, his low quota is too much for Cregger to overcome. IT Nerd Prediction: Joe (+2), Cregger (even)

IT Nerd Overall Preduction: Hawk/Lochner/Joe take all 7

Week 11 Results, Position Night #1 Matchups (Week 12)

A quick note on the Week 1-3 makeups. There are still four matches outstanding from Weeks 1-3.

  • Week 1: Connor vs. Hawk
  • Week 1: Bob Moran vs. Tom Donegan
  • Week 2: Mike Shanahan vs. Tony Mass
  • Week 3: Chris Donegan vs. Jeff Raus

In consultation with El Commish, the Week 12 match-ups for Position Night #1 will be locked in based on the scores we have at the time of this writing (Sunday 7/12 afternoon). Those four outstanding matches need to be played before the start of play on Week 12. If they are not made up, a 1-1 draw will be entered.
