Tanner Valley by the maps…
With the downpour last night, I got thinking about what the course is going to look like on Thursday. I was down to the driving range on Monday and there was standing water on 1, 13 and 14. I went online to check to see what Tanner looks like by the maps.
The first map should be no shocker to all of us. There is a New York State DEC and Federal Wetland surrounding Tanner. The white portions are the DEC Wetland, the blue is the Federal Wetland.
The final look at the map shows floodplains. While this isn’t surprising that the course has floodplains on it (think 1, 13, 9 after a rainy day), what is surprising is the extent of it. Looks like the only holes not in the floodplain is 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 16 and only half of 12, 15.

Errors in your scores? Let me know!
When we switched over to this Excel-based behemoth to track the scores in TBO Golf, it had some bugs in the system. Within the next few years, most (if not all) bugs had been worked out of the system.
What can never be removed from the system is the IT Nerd fat-fingering a number or entering the wrong score. With a human entering the scores, there is always going to be errors. You might have got a 4 on a hole, but I entered in a 5. I’ve done it before and I’ll most certainly do it again.
There are some folks who are very diligent about reviewing their scores and let me know when a score was entered incorrectly. In all honesty, I appreciate the feedback loop letting me know something is wrong. If you aren’t doing so already, I’d ask that when you come to check the website to review the standings, take a look at the Weekly results posts and make sure your round was entered correctly. I can then double check what was entered vs. what was on the card.
Which is a nice transition to my next update: paper cards. Previously, El Commish held on to all the paper cards for record keeping. So if there was an issue, we would go to the paper card for review. Going forward, I will be taking photos of all the cards and storing them in the cloud (OneDrive to be precise). That way, there is an electronic record of the cards that the league can use as storage. If you are making up a round, please take a photo of the card and text it to myself or El Commish (Chris).

Week 6 Results
UPDATE #2: Was also brought to my attention that a 7 was recorded on a par 3 for a player. Under that scenario, the tracker did not recognize the 7 as a -1 towards quota. Tracker adjusted, scores adjusted and updated
UPDATE: It was brought to my attention that Connor did not record an eagle on #17 as was entered. Connor birdied #17. While it did not impact the result in the match, it did impact the result for the team point. Standings and skins have been updated to reflect this result.

A Quick look at some stats and…
A look at how the league is scoring its points. Here’s how to read this…take TJ for example.
In an average 9-hole round, TJ has a 2.2% likelihoold of getting an eagle, a 2.2% likelihood of getting a birdie, a 37.8% likelihood of getting a par, a 44.4% likelihood of getting a bogey, a 13.3% likelihood of getting no points and a 2.2% likelihood of getting a double par. So, TJ’s average round would be a 13.0. Compare that to his average Quota so far for the year and he’s right where he should be having just over his quota (0.1).

At the end of last year, I plotted out each players performance versus their quota. This was the result:
When you look at the graph, a majority of the league was between 80-120% of their quota. We had 3 “curve-killers” at over 130%. What we want the distribution to look like was this:
Ideally, you want golfers to hit 100% of their quota each and every week. There will be variations in performance week to week, but you don’t want large variations from the Quota via under or over performing.
In an attempt to get a more normal distribution like the one above, we made some modifications to the scoring system. There was a specific point of emphasis to bring the outlying points (those at +130% Quota Performance) back into normal distribution. Here’s what the curve looks like so far this year:
Note the scale on the x-axis (the horizontal one for those who failed statistics) is modified. There is a significant amount of underperformance going on. I’d like to chalk that up to still shaking off the rust. As Quota’s move to better reflect play, I’d expect these numbers to be a tighter grouping. The good news is that there really isn’t a significant amount of overperformance. So who’s that curve-killer from Flight 2 in the 125%-135% range? It’s none other than the IT Nerd himself at 129.5%. That is likely to decrease as my Quota has risen from an 11 to start the year to a 15 heading into Week 6.
