Week 15 Standings and Skins Updated, Week 16 Schedule

As we’re heading down the home stretch, there are only a few teams that start to seperate themselves from the rest of the pack. Aside from the top 2 teams, I’d say there are four additional teams that have an outside shot at the title.

T-Bird, Jon C., and Dan Mahar have a matchup against a struggling team of Mike C., Fanto and Art. Seven points would vault them right back into the thick of things. Hawk, Prucha and Cregger have a pivotal match against Pat D., Vinny and Bobby Z.. Devin, Mott, and Joey need to get a sizeable win against Dickie, Denny and the Flight 3 superstar Bill John. If Hawk and company can take at least 5, they should still be in it. If they lose, they will most likely be out of the chase.

All of these other matches are important, but the KEY matchup of the week is TJ, Connor and Tony Massa against Nick, DJ, and Bobby Mo. #1 vs. #2. Here’s a quick snapshot of how these two teams are performing over the last 9 weeks

Nick Wight: 8-0, averaging a 39

DJ Mahar: 1-8, averaging a 44

Bobby Mo: 3-4-2, averaging a 50

TJ Donegan: 5-4, averaging a 42

Connor Brown: 6-3, averaging a 40

Tony Massa: 8-1, averaging a 45

This IT Nerd believes the key match between the teams is going to be DJ vs Connor. While DJ is struggling over the last 9 weeks, there is little doubt that he is more than capable of going low. If he can, that will have massive implications for those teams still chasing the title.

However, if TJ and team take this matchup, they really put themselves in the driver’s seat for the last few weeks of this season. In a nutshell, the title would be their’s to lose.

Random Stats after Week 14

Wanted to take a look at a few Random Stats after week 14….

Bill John is demolishing the record on Total Winnings. Bill has won $194, which is almost $50 more than second and third place all time of $147 set by Kevin Keding in 2011 and $145 by Mike Carroll in 2010. Bill’s 15 skins aren’t quite top of list with that record still held by Mike Carroll with 19 Skins in 2010, with Dale Russell (2011) Dan Mahar (2009 and 2008) and Drew Prucha (2008) tied for second with 18. Beers are on Bill!!

With the Season in its final quarter, here’s a quick sneak peak at everyone’s scoring averages up to this point. Note the names are highlighted to indicate which flight the player started in. A negative change from 2013 means you shaved strokes from your average. Positive change means you added strokes.

Stat Request from Nick, Hawk

In the most time honored of traditions, Nick, Hawk and myself had a nice discussion the league. Specifically, about tweaks to the scoring system for next season. There’s been discussions with others around ways to improve the scoring system. A quick note before getting into the suggestions…

The formula behind the Quota system was set up so that most players would hit or surpass their Quota. Key word there is MOST: We wanted the MOST of the matches to be a question of who did better against their quota instead of who did less worse against their quota. Using 2013 numbers, we changed the “starting point” from 39 to 34. Here’s what various “starting points” would yield, on average, per week:

34: 24 players hitting or surpassing their quota (2/3 of the league)

35 and 36: 17 players hitting or surpassing their quota (1/2 of the league)

37 and 38: 12 players hitting or surpassing their quota (1/3 of the leage)

39: 8 players hitting or surpassing their quota (~1/4 of the league)

With the history lesson over, here’s a few of the ideas:

  1. Institute a Quota “Floor” – We had a similar rule in the previous scoring system where a player could only have a max HDCP of 12. This would be that a player has a minimum Quota. According to the latest numbers, that floor would be around a 5, but is subject to change.
  2. Institute Negative Points – In the old scoring system, there was a disincentive to scoring high (the 2 points for total match score). Now, if you are at double bogey, there is no incentive to keep scores low after missing out on the bogey point other than pride/ego. Here’s a few of the ideas around this:
    1. (-1) point for Triple Bogey or worse – That would be a 6 on par 3’s, 7 on par 4’s, 8 on par 5’s
    2. (-1) point for Double Par – That would be a 6 on par 3’s, 8 on par 4’s, 10 on par 10’s

Hawk and Nick really wanted to see, by Flight, what the Net results are for each player/Flight (Net = Pts scored – Quota). The below is to a picture of that graph. The horizontal axis shows Net results, while the vertical axis is the count of players at that Net result. Blue is Flight 1, red is Flight 2, green is Flight 3. The lightly shaded shapes are the distribution curves for each flight (blue = F1, red = F2, green = F3). The Purple line is the distribution curve for the entire league. The Black line is an ‘Ideal’ bell curve (or at least my attempt at it).

Distribution

Actual Numbers:

Flight 1 – Average +3, Standard Deviation 6

Flight 2 – Average -2, Standard Deviation 8

Flight 3 – Average +5.3, Standard Deviation 10

League – Average +2, Standard Deviation 8.5

For those who slept through Statistics class, here’s some conclusions you can draw from this:

  1. Current Quota System clearly favors Flight 3: 6 of the top 10 in terms of Net results are from Flight 3, with 5 of them being in the top 7! That being said, they have the widest variations in their scores (34 points between top (+24) and bottom (-10))
  2. Flight 2 is not performing well in this scoring system: The average below Quota isn’t even the start. 8 of its 12 (75%) players are Net negative. According to the graph, about 80% of Flight 2 would lose to the AVERAGE Flight 3 golfer.
  3. Flight 1 is performing right where it was expected: Despite having one low extreme and one high extreme, 83% of Flight 1 is within 7 net points of each other (.5pts per week)

For those not familiar with statistical distributions and how it would apply for our system, we want the average to be as close to our goal as possible and the variances to be as small as possible. What the goal should be is certainly up for interpretation – 50/50 Quota hitting (0 average) vs. 75/25 Quota’s being met (above 0 average). What will be an offseason task for the IT Nerd is to determine what changes should be made to the scoring system to achieve those goals. Use the data from 2014 Season to go forward into the 2015 Season.

Standings Updated, Week 14 Results, Week 15 Schedule

With the last of the July 4th matches being made up this week, we finally have a 100% up-to-date standings. You can check the Standings page to see how your team stands.

The IT Nerd made a prediction at the beginning of the year that the winning team would have 72 points. With 4 weeks left to go, the IT Nerd is going to be a bit low in that prediction, but not off by more than a few points! In this Nerd’s opinion, there are 7 teams still in the hunt with 4 weeks to go. For those who want to see a tight race towards the end, be sure to root for Bobby Z, Pat and Vinny to take down Nick, DJ and Bobby Mo. Also hope Dickie, Denny and Bill John can get it done against TJ, Connor and Tony Massa.

IT Nerd UPDATE (7/23, AM) – A few more matches have been crossed off the make up list. There’s only five make up matches left to be played. Week 13 is officially closed. I’ve sent emails to those whom I do not know when the make up is being played. If you don’t have plans to make it up, please let me know so I can input a 1-1 tie for you.

IT Nerd UPDATE (7/22)There have been some matches made up and scores entered. I’ve crossed those names off the below list. If you have a card for these make ups, just take a photo of it and email it or text it to me.

There won’t be any standings updates for play through Week 13. There are outstanding matches for 3 seperate weeks. Below are what I do not have cards for. If the scores are not communicated to myself or the Commish after play has closed on 7/24, then these matches will be input as a 1-1 tie with each player having zero points towards the overall team point.

Unlike the previous scoring system, one or more unplayed match has larger implications, Rather than go into detail, know that every aspect of the league is affected by not playing or making up a match timely – Handicap, Standings, Skins, etc.

Week 11 Matches left to be played (7 total)- must be made up by start of play on 7/24:

Pat Cregg vs Bob Moran

Tom Donegan vs Joe Donegan

Brian Thompson vs Tom Phillips

Gary Thompson vs Jon Carroll

TJ Donegan vs Dale Russell

Tony Massa vs Marty Donegan

Vinny Procopia vs Denny Welch

Week 12 Matches left to be played (1 total) – must be made up by start of play on 7/24:

Dick Donegan vs Joe Donegan

Week 13 Matches left to be played (2 total) – must be made up by start of play on 7/24:

DJ Mahar vs. Matt Lochner – Scheduled for 7/22, 5 pm

Drew Prucha vs. Gary Thompson

Week 11 Results TBD…Week 12 Schedule

There were 7 matches played on July 3, so that means 11 matches are yet to be made up. Per El Commish, you have until the start of play on July 24th to make up this match. If it is not made up, you will have a 1-1 split with your opponent and both players will be marked as hitting their Quota (both have 0 pts towards the team point).

On another note, there are two Week 1 make ups still outstanding. If those are not made up by the start of play this Thursday (7/10), then they will also be input as a 1-1 split, 0 towards team quota. Be ready for a serious standings shake-up after this week!

Week 12 Schedule and Quotas are below. Note that no player has had its Week 11 match included in the Quota calculation.

Stat Request – Cross Flight Play

You ask, the IT Nerd answers….Dan Mahar asked that I take a look at how the cross-flight play has been doing. A little history before getting into the stats. There was some talk about discounting the cross-flight matches point values over a concern that the Flight 3 golfers would be at a disadvantage. The IT Nerd ran the entire 2013 season through the 2014 scoring system and it was found that there was actually a slight advantage to the Flight 3 golfers, but it was minimal. Therefore, The Commish made the decision to keep all match scoring the same.

Below is the Flight by Flight comparison. How this reads is that Flight 1 golfers are 8-7-2 and are +23 against their Quota’s when playing Flight 2 golfers.

  Flight 1 Flight 2 Flight 3
Flight 1   8-7-2 (+23) 6-8-4 (-14)
Flight 2 7-8-2 (-23)   8-8-1 (-7)
Flight 3 8-6-4 (+14) 8-8-1 (+7)

You can see that Flight 3 is outperforming both Flight 1 and Flight 2 (+21). Flight 1 comes in second at +9, with Flight 2 taking a pounding at -30.

The above data has three anomalies in it, however. Connor (Flight 2, +6) beat T-Brd (Flight 1, -4) by 10 points, Dickie (Flight 1, +8) beat sub Steve Burt (Flight 2, -6) by 14, and Devin (Flight 1, +10) beat Gary Thompson (Flight 2, -3) by 13. When you remove these three data points, here’s the breakdown.

  Flight 1 Flight 2 Flight 3
Flight 1   6-6-2 (+9) 6-8-4 (-14)
Flight 2 6-6-2 (-9)   8-8-1 (-7)
Flight 3 8-6-4 (+14) 8-8-1 (+7)

With the anomalies removed, Flight 3 is unaffected (+21) but it expands its lead on Flight 1 (-5). Flight 2 still is bringing up the rear at -16.

So who’s kicking all this butt in Flight 3? It’s no shocker to see that 3 of the top 5 for cross flight play come from Flight 3. Bobby Mo at 3-0-0 (+13), Bill Kirkby at 3-0-0 (+8) and Dan Mahar at 2-0-1 (+6). From three guys, that’s a record of 8-0-1 (+27)….and we were worried about the Flight 3 guys?!?!

Bob Moran 3-0-0 (+13)
Bill Kirkby 3-0-0 (+8)
Drew Prucha 3-0-0 (+6)
Rick Fanto 3-0-0 (+1)
Dan Mahar 2-0-1 (+6)
Pat Donahue 2-1-0 (+10)

Week 10 Updates Posted

Week 10 updates are now posted on the Standings Page. A few more quick notes before posting the results.

  1. There’s still 3 makeups yet to be played – Antos vs. Devin, Antos vs. Bill John and Vinny Procopio vs. DJ Mahar. Word from the clubhouse is that an email from The Commish regarding this might be coming out, so check your emails.
  2. This week’s Stat Request comes from Dan Mahar. Dan would like to see how the Cross-Flight play is doing: Are there certain groups doing better than others? That will be coming next week. Seriously people, I have a life and its the weekend…
  3. If you’d like to see a particular stat, don’t hesitate to ask the IT Nerd on what you’d like to see.
