The Life of a Sub…

We’ve all experienced it. Wither playing against one or having your partner being played for. A sub…So how do the subs do when thrown into the fire that is TBO Golf? The IT Nerd dives into this.

Who has the most appearances as a sub? No suprise its Picklejuice himself, Steve Pichoske with 25. Jason “Animal Whisperer” Driscoll is scond with 19, with Rob “Beefy Burrito” Manipole third at 17. That’s nice that they frequent Tanner often, but who does the best as a sub? Given the different scoring systems, I have to rate the subs by Win % instead of Pts %

Shockingly, Chris Groat has 5 sub appearances (soon to be 6) and won 4 of them. That puts him at the top of the table with an 80% win percentage. Long forgotten Shawn Keding is second with a 66.7% win % over 12 appearances. Steve Pic and the IT Nerd are tied for third with a 60% win %. Those are the guys that you either want subbing for you or your partner, but dread seeing your name as playing them.

So who should you be licking your chops to play or give The Commish a few choice words for getting this guy as your team sub? There’s 6 guys with at least 3 appearances and a win percentage UNDER 25%. That means 3 times out of 4, they will lose. And here they are….

Rob Manipole 4 12 1 23.5%
Jason Driscoll 4 14 1 21.1%
Tom Vaughn 1 4 0 20.0%
Jamie O’Brien 2 8 1 18.2%
Doug Sprague 1 3 2 16.7%
Dave Hook 1 4 1 16.7%

As Steve Pic has subbeed for old Flight 1 and old Flight 2 golfers, how does each FLIGHT perform when it has a sub? In other words, is a sub more likely to win if he is subbing for Flight 3 or Flight 4? Here’s what the numbers look like…

È

  Wins Loses Ties Win %
F1 37 26 3 56.1%
F2 17 24 7 35.4%
F3 12 20 1 36.4%
F4 13 40 5 22.4%

As you can see, Flight 1 subs win more times than they lose. The other Flights do not have a very good sub record with respect to Wins/Loss, especially Flight 4. While the Win/Losses are not that good, the interesting stat is when you look at the Points Percentage. While Flight 4 loses 77.6% of the time, they soften the blow by getting 40% of the points. It would be like losing 8-12 in the old scoring system. Flights 2 and 3 share a similar points percentage, roughly losing 9-11 in the old scoring system.

That’s the past though…what about the future? There is no ‘softening the blow’ on a loss in the new scoring system. Play through Week 8 has 16 subs going 9-7-0 over the weeks. Flight 1 subs lead the pack (Pichoske) at 5-0-0, with Flight 2 subs holding even at 2-2-0. But Flight 3 subs are coming in at 2-5-0.

Food for thought…..

Nerd

This should stir the pot….but for next year

Took another look at performance vs. Quota. It’s a little late to implement this year, but certainly something that we might want to revist next year. In the past, we used to have a Handicap Ceiling. That meant that a HDCP could be no higher than a 12, per say…

What if we had a Quota Floor? A number that you could no go below in terms of Quota, regardless of play. Do the numbers bear it out to even implement one?

Here’s what the IT Nerd did…Took a look at everyone’s rounds so far this year. Take DJ Mahar for example. DJ doesn’t have an Eagle (yet) this year, but he gets a Birdie 1.9% of the time. He gets a Par 42.6% of the time, a Bogey 40.7% of the time and doesn’t score 14.8% of the time. Over the course of an average round, DJ scores 12 points based on these numbers. His average Quota this year is an 11.7, putting his average performance at a +0.3. Each individual is at the bottom of this post.

I took a look at implementing a Quota Floor of a 4 and a 5. A Quota Floor of 4 would only affect Bob Moran, Bill Kirkby and Bobby Zaleski. A Quota Floor of 5 would only add Art Brillanti into the mix. I excluded subs from this analysis, but they would also be affected.

When you look at these numbers, it looks like the Quota Floor of 4 doesn’t do enough. A Quota Floor of 5 is what is needed to balance it out. That begs the question: What if we had implemented a Quota Floor of 5 at the start of the year? How would that have impacted results?

Bobby Mo – One Win becomes a Tie, a seperate Tie becomes a Win

Bill K – A Win and a Tie turns to two Losses

Bobby Z – Two Ties become two Losses

Art – No impact on results

With results changing, whats the impact to the standings?? The first standings is what it looks like today, the second set of standings is what it would look like with a Quota Floor of 5.

Week 6 Update pending, a quick stat check….

I’ve been hearing some discussions about the Quota Performance metric that replaces the Super 18. It’s also closely related to how those with low Quota’s perform substaintially better than those with higher Quota’s.

Here’s a graph of the actual stats. It’s updated through Week 6 sans Antos/Carrigan match. Picture2

Some Points to note:

  • A little less than half the league (16 players) are 10% above or 10% below their Quota to date.
  • 80% of the players (29) are withing 20% of their Quota to date.
  • Flight 3 is the most distributed of the flights. That also fits with the historical play of Flight 4 – extremely unpredictable scores, but few rounds/holes of low scores. One Player below 70% of their Quota to date and three players over 130% of the Quota to date
  • Flight 1 is the most tightly grouped of the flights. Again, this fits the historical play of Flight 1 golfers – More consistent play. In fact, most of Flight 1 is performing ABOVE their Quotas.

To the point that those with low quotas perform substantially better….this is somewhat true. While a super low Quota (2 or 3) has higher performance, it appears a low quota (4, 5, 6) doesn’t really improve performance. Here’s some examples:

Bobby Mo – Week 7 Quota: 3, Quota Performance: 200%

Bill K – Week 7 Quota: 2, Quota Performance: 177.8%

Bobby Z – Week 7 Quota: 4, Quota Performance: 116.7%

Joe Donegan – Week 7 Quota: 5, Quota Performance 68.6%

Tony Massa, Dan Mahar, Jim Morgan – Week 7 Quota: 6, Quota Performance: All three at 81%

Just something to think about…

Week 5 Results Updated

Before getting into the Week 5 results, a quick point. In previous years, I was able to post scores for the League if we were waiting on one match to be made up. Under the new scoring system, one unplayed match affects two other played matches due to the Team Point up for grabs. Therefore, I’ll only post scores when the entire week is complete.

Standings page updated to reflect results through Week 5. SKins and Week 6 schedule below.

Week 3 Standings, Week 4 Schedule, Super 18 Replacement

Gents,

Standings have been updated to reflect Week 3 play. Remember, Week 1 make-ups are still in progress.

Per the Commish’s direction, we will no longer be doing the Super 18. In it’s place is a competition against yourself and your quota. What the calculation does is take how many points you scored towards your quota and divide it by your quota. So, if your quota was 10 and you scored 15, you earned 150% of your quota that week. We take that calculation over the entire season and rank you by flight. Those standings are at the bottom of the 2014 Standings page.
