Got a stat request earlier this year to look at the player averages per hole. So I did. The below file has two tabs in it. One for each player’s average per hole over their career and by year. The second is what I’m calling ‘Player Efficiency’. I’ll explain that in a bit.
Here’s how to use the file.
- Open up the file (duh!)
- In Cell A2 on both tabs, select the golfer from the list you want to look at. Note that their is a ‘TBO League’ listed as a player. That will show you the entire league over the year.
File can be downloaded by clicking here —> HOLE BY HOLE
How to read the ‘Player Avg by Hole’ tab
After selecting a player, the player’s career average is displayed as the green bars. Each year the player has participated in TBO has a corresponding tick mark on the graph (blue diamond for 2008, etc..). You can see what your averages per hole each year; where you had good/bad years on a hole
Understanding ‘Player Efficiency’
When I started looking at the averages, a question in my head was “Are my numbers any good? How does my averages compare to my opponents?” So what I came up with was ‘Player Efficiency’
In a round of golf, par is what’s “expected” on each hole. As we all know, there are holes we all struggle with (fuck you #9!) and holes we all love to play (I’m looking at you #13!). Think of it like this: the lower you score on a hole, the more efficient you are (savings strokes). The higher you score on a hole, the less efficient you are (wasting strokes).
I’ll explain the formula in person if you are interested…would be a short novel.
How to Read ‘Player Efficiency’ tab
After selecting a player, you’ll see three sets of bars going in different directions.
First, you’ll need to know what a good or bad Efficiency Rating is. Think of par as the 100% or baseline number. Anything above 100% means efficiency on a hole. The higher that Rating is on a hole, the more you save strokes on that hole. Anyting below 100% means inefficiency on a hole. The lower that Rating is, the more you waste strokes on a hole.
Boiled down: The higher the bar, the better you are. The lower the bar, the more you suck.
- The Green bars are the Efficiency Rating for the selected player
- The Red bars are the Efficiency Rating for the other golfers in the selected player’s Flight
- The Blue bars is the entire TBO League as a whole, across all Flights
See you bitches tomorrow!
